Austrian slackliner Florian Zoller has set a new world record by walking a narrow line stretched between two freely suspended gondola cabins at the Gurgl ski resort in Tyrol, Austria.
Zoller crossed about 144 metres (472 feet) of webbing, only 25 millimetres (about one inch) wide, between the cabins of the TOP EXPRESS gondola. He was roughly 150 metres above the ground. The crossing took 15 minutes and 30 seconds.
The previous world record for a highline between cable car cabins was 65 metres (213 feet), set in September 2021 at the Brandnertal ski resort in Austria. Zoller's crossing more than doubled that distance.
Unlike a normal highline, which is fixed to solid anchors, Zoller's line was attached to two gondola cabins that swing and tilt with his movements and with every gust of wind. The line also sagged, so the final stretch became an increasingly steep climb.
Zoller, from Haiming in Tyrol, has been slacklining for 17 years and said he had pursued this idea for eight years. He already held the Austrian record for the longest highline crossing, a walk of over one kilometre. The International Slackline Association has confirmed the crossing will be recognised as a world record.
The feat shows how far the sport has moved from standard mountain highlines, where the line stays still.
